The Ohio Senate voted 30-1 this week in favor of restrictions on the private ownership of potentially dangerous exotic animals. This is a positive first step towards bringing common sense and respect for all creatures back to the table in Ohio and around the nation.

Many argue “bans” on private ownership will do nothing to prevent another incident like the one last October in Zanesville, OH when 49 tigers, lions, bears, and others had to be killed after their owner, Terry Thompson, allegedly released them, then committed suicide. Thompson was a convicted felon with a history of animal abuse charges, so it’s a tragedy no laws existed to prevent him from keeping such animals after even the first violation. This bill, when passed, will establish common sense standards that will improve the lives of animals that remain in private hands, and help reduce the risks they pose to the public. As a result of those who have rallied in favor of restrictions, people are learning that not every Jungle Jack we see on television is WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). There is often much more to the story.

As Ohio’s legislation now moves to the House chamber, we hope it moves swiftly, without further dilution. We hope all who are about animals and public safety will tell federal legislators to support H.R. 4122, the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act that proposes to further restrict private ownership and breeding of big cats, for profit and exploitation, across the nation. We urge you, greater Fort Wayne, to get behind these bills, and to support our efforts locally to provide refuge to displaced, captive-raised exotic animals so they may enjoy peace and solitude for the rest of their lives. This week is just the beginning. We will be counting on you to help us, and other “true” sanctuaries. Help us pick up the pieces for those animals sure to be displaced, ready for their second chances. Thank you for your support.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuAIfXfLmZs&feature=colike

The link is for a video about discrimination that took place in Bluffton Indiana at a popular gas station. The patron was simply trying to get something to drink and was run out of the store being called various bigoted names, by the store manager/co-owner. It is my opinion that this type of behavior can no longer be tolerated. However the police station and other co-owner feel as though no harm was actually done. When will we as humans start to realize that words do hurt? I hope you guys can follow up with this gentleman and dig deeper into the whole story and find some justice. I grew up around Bluffton, but now I believe it is Bluffton that has some growing up to do.

Senator Lugar and Congressman Stutman have proposed the REFRESH Act - The Rural Economic Farm and Ranch Sustainability and Hunger Act. I would like to see an inclusion in this REFRESH Act for a carry-over from the 2008 Farm Bill, Title IX, Section 9003, a renewable fertilizer study. I believe that NE Indiana could benefit from renewable NH3/ammonia fertilizer in particular. NH3 can also be a fuel and energy carrier, also now of interest to our local Office of Homeland Security where they with other local entities are working on a "Local Energy Assurance Planning" (LEAP) document. Ammonia will likely and hopefully receive evaluation for its potential future role in our local and regional energy future in this LEAP document.

Please visit my "Model Sustainable Cities" website for more of my work and my perspective, and even a contact form for e-mail.

I believe that we could develop a local, regional NH3/ammonia economy with Fort Wayne as an anchoring model sustainable city with a smart microgrid. My "Model Sustainable Cities" website at http://modelsustainablecities.weebly.com has more detail. I've been planting seeds about the idea with many local folks. I wanted to say "Hi" and introduce myself.

I didn't know where else to tell this story, so here goes. A year ago on april 27th my family found ourselves in parkview hospital. On the morning of the 26th our dad was life flighted from paulding ohio. There is so much more to this story, but just not enough room here for it. Our dad was something else, well loved by our whole community, the Lord never gave a more forgiving, loving and family man then what my dad was. He passed on the 27th. All that being said, there was a small moment in time in that hospital, we hadn't slept, it was the second day, I was sweaty, stinking, in need of a shower, and with my face swollen sitting in my dads intensive care room, for he had never woken yet, we saw someone walk by. I jumped up and followed her through the double doors to the hallway, I know I was studdering, and looked homeless and raggity, "Linda?? Hi I'm sorry, are you linda Jackson?". See we live in paulding, the only news we get is indiana news. But Linda was a love of my dads, poor woman didn't know it, but every single day he would either yell at her, praise her, or sometimes cuss at her, she was just his favorite! I can't explain everything that happened after that, not in type, but she did so many incredible things for a stranger in the next few mins. including, being all dressed, ready to go to the station, getting down on her knees, digging through her purse, to give me her card, and write her personal phone no. on it, and telling me over and over again "if you need anything, clothes, a bed to sleep in, so food..you call me, I mean it, I'm not just sayin it, call me" I can't begin to explain what those words did for me. And for one year I've thought about that few mins, just the kindness that was in her eyes, she hugged me a few times, I just stood there, I couldn't but mumble a few things when she asked while we we're there. I guess I'm just writing this so that whomever it concerns at your station, knows and realizes that one of the most kindest people I've ever be blessed to meet, is right there amoung you. Please let her know that she touched my heart, and I'll never forget it. Thank you.
